steep raine cabins | highway one | california

If you drive on Highway One from San Francisco, just as you start to descend into Stinson Beach, if you look over the cliffs jutting into the mighty Pacific Ocean, you will see a a group of rustic cabins perched over where the waves crash thunderously on the rocks.

These cabins are a part of the State Park system and are available for rent for $100. I had heard that you must book them out a year in advance. Well, I live here and work at accommodations in the National Park. So, I am too familiar with the current slow season. A Thursday night? In January? No problem.

As soon as I entered to simple yet gorgeous wooden cabin with it’s massive picture window facing the swelling ocean waves, wood stove and picnic table, I wanted to stay forever. My fantasies of rustic cabin life came alive, if only for a night.

At sunset, all the inhabitants of the cabins came out, to bask in the amber light and feel grateful for this place we all found ourselves on this moment.

I wandered around happily taking photos and realizing how out of practice I am in. The golden hour commitment must be put back into place.

All night long, you could hear the waves. The sound engulfed my slumber and wrapped me up tight, pacifying and keeping me asleep. The original sound machine.

One night was too short. I want to go back. I want you all to come visit, so I can take you there!
