I had the pleasure of attending one of Elizabeth’s food and farm tours here in West Marin.
What a brilliant idea for an area rich in agricultural history and phenomenal local and organic foods.
Elizabeth has family history in West Marin, attended culinary school and after giving a bunch of culinary friends a foodie tour of West Marin was encouraged to start a business.
She has a list of various tours she does and you should go check out her website to see all that she has to offer.
Here a a few pictures of the tour I was on. We started out at Cowgirl Creamery, learning how they make their famous cheeses, then headed to the beloved Marin Sun farms for some local grass fed goat and lamb burgers. We went to a local honor system farm stand, Table Top Farms and of course, to Hog Island Oyster company for oysters on Tomales bay. Oh, and how could I forget, we checked out Brickmaiden Breads to see the breads made in a wood fires, stone oven.
But my favorite was our visit with Gordon at Heidrun Meadery where he is a bee-keeper and sparkling mead maker. He was so well spoken and interesting and enlightened us on the intriguing ways of bees.
His mead was unlike most I had had being that he makes it with in the champagne method. It is effervescent and light, not super sweet and high alcohol that I have had before. And being a wine made of honey, it is sulfite free.
It was fun be a tourist in my own town as I would never even think of venturing out on a Saturday where we go from a sleepy little town to a bustling, active one.
If you are up this way, you should definitely schedule a tour as you get into places you probably wouldn't on you own!
